Spring Bike Tune-Up Checklist: Get Your Bike Ready to Ride

Spring is when most bikes come out of storage — and when most riders discover what they should have done before putting the bike away in the fall. A proper spring tune-up takes 30–60 minutes and prevents the mechanical surprises that ruin early-season rides.

Work through this checklist before your first ride of the season.


1. Tires and Wheels

Check tire pressure. Tires lose pressure over winter even without a puncture. Inflate to your optimum pressure. [Use the Silca Tire Pressure calculator for road and gravel bikes]. For mountain bikes inflate back to your favored pressures. For tubeless setups, check sealant — it may have dried out and need refreshing.

Inspect tires for cracking or dry rot. Rubber degrades over time, especially with temperature swings. Look for cracking along the sidewalls or tread. If you see it, replace before riding.

Check wheel true. Spin each wheel and watch for lateral wobble. Minor wobble can be trued at home; significant wobble warrants a shop visit.

Check quick releases or thru-axles. Make sure they're properly secured and functioning.


2. Brakes

Check brake pad wear. Most pads have wear indicators. If you're past them, replace before riding.

Check brake cable tension (rim brakes). Cables stretch over time. Adjust barrel adjusters or re-tension at the anchor bolt as needed.

Bleed hydraulic brakes if needed. If your lever feels spongy or pulls too far before engaging, a bleed is overdue. This is a shop job if you haven't done it before.

Check rotor condition (disc brakes). Look for scoring, warping, or contamination. Contaminated rotors (from chain lube overspray, for example) will squeal and have reduced stopping power.


3. Drivetrain

This is where most of the work is — and where most of the wear accumulates.

Clean the chain. Use a chain cleaner or degreaser. A winter's worth of grime, old lube, and road contamination needs to come off before you add fresh lube.

Measure chain wear. Use a chain wear indicator tool. At 0.5% wear, replace the chain. Riding a worn chain accelerates cassette and chainring wear significantly. Also the second half of the wear will take much less time/ miles than the first half. 

Lube the chain properly. One drop on each end of roller, worked into the rollers, excess wiped off. The RotaLuber makes this precise and consistent — Pinkbike noted it "eliminates the mess and guesswork from chain maintenance." 

Check derailleur alignment and limit screws. Shift through all gears. Hesitation, skipping, or noise usually means cable tension adjustment. Bent derailleur hangers are common after any crash or tip-over — check visually.

Inspect chainring and cassette teeth. Hooked or shark-fin shaped teeth mean replacement is needed. New chain, worn cassette = skipping under load.

Check bottom bracket. Grab the crank arms and try to move them laterally. Any play means the BB needs service or replacement.


4. Cockpit and Contact Points

Check handlebar and stem bolts. Torque to spec (usually 4–6 Nm for carbon, 5–8 Nm for alloy). Loose bars are a safety issue.

Check saddle and seatpost. Ensure the saddle is at your preferred height and angle. Check that the seatpost clamp is secure but not too tight for smooth dropper post actuation.

Inspect bar tape or grips. Worn or slipping grips reduce control. Fresh bar tape is a cheap upgrade that makes a real difference.


5. E-Bike Specific Checks

If you're riding an e-bike, add these to your checklist:

  • Charge the battery fully and check that the charge holds [Remember always store the battery with 30%-80% charge for a long life] 
  • Check motor mount bolts — vibration can loosen them over a season

  • Update firmware if your system has pending updates
  • Check display and sensor connections for corrosion or loose connectors

6. Test Ride

Before committing to a long ride, do a short test loop — 10–15 minutes. Shift through every gear, test both brakes firmly, and listen for any unusual sounds. Address anything you find before heading out for real.


The 30-Minute Version

If you're short on time, prioritize: tires, brakes, and chain. These three cover the most common causes of mechanical failures and safety issues. Everything else can wait for a longer session — but don't skip these.

A well-maintained bike is a more enjoyable bike. Spring is the best time to reset your maintenance baseline and start the season right.
